Why Christian Counseling is Important

Life is full of times where we need guidance, help conquering shame, support, to work towards healing, a confidant, and Christian counseling is a great place to get a Biblical perspective.

Struggling with mental health or simply needing guidance or even emotional and mental support isn’t a sign of spiritual weakness, and it isn’t something to struggle with alone.

As Christians, we’re called to bear one another’s burdens and even seek good counsel.

I have gone to counseling with a solid, Christian counselor and it has changed my life and really helped me better work through things I’m going through with the Lord.

In this blog. I’ll be going through why Christian counseling is important.

Faithful Counseling is a BetterHelp partner that is an online Christian Counseling Service. Faithful Counseling matches you with your own licenesed professional therapist who is a practicing Christian.

You can send a message to your counselor and schedule video or phone sessions. You can also easily and freely change counselors until you find the right fit for you.

1. We are called to not live this life alone.

Moreso than just with a counselor, we are called to be active members of the body of Christ.

This helps us to be encouraged, to have life spoken into us, to combat sin and temptation, to confess sin and have accountability, to have companionship in joyful and hard moments in life. Christian community is important.

For more professional help in these areas, Christian counselors provide a great additional space to be poured into.

  • “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)
  • “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.” (James 5:16

  • “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:1)

2. There are believers who are certified counselors who have the gifts of wisdom, discernment, and encouragement.

As believers in the body of Christ, we are called to work together, lean on one another, and build one another up. This doesn’t need to take place in a paid for, certified counseling session.

There are many Christians with gifts like these – sometimes our friends, pastors, family members. But this is a place we can go.

  • “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.” (Romans 12:6a) – we can only use our gifts with other people or uncover our gifts as we interact with others
  • “So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.” (Romans 12:5)
  • “The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.” (1 Corinthians 12:21-22)

3. It’s Biblical to seek counsel – whether that’s professional and certified or with trusted Christians around you.

  • “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. (Proverbs 11:14)”
  • “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.” (Proverbs 19:20)

4. Guidance and counsel in your life, as a Christian, should come from someone who knows and walks with God and can counsel you in the ways of God.

It is important for us to be careful with the insight and guidance or counsel we allow into our lives. Colossians 2:8 says, “See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.”

We can be more secure in receiving counsel from someone who is filled with the Spirit of God. Even still, because we are all human, it’s important to find a Christian counselor who is Bible-believing and in an active relationship with Christ.
